Katie Cheshire

I have taught for eleven years across EYFS and Primary schools. I have been a SENCo for seven years and more recently, an Assistant Head, Inclusion Leader & Co-ordinator for Children who are Looked After. During this time I have obtained a wealth of experience in supporting children with a variety of SEND, including neurodiversity and adverse childhood experiences. In every role I have not only worked with children but also worked closely with their families and carers. I have become increasingly interested in the overlaps, similarities and differences between autism and attachment difficulties and the impact that adverse childhood experiences can have on the sensory processing needs of a child.

I am passionate about supporting and understanding every child as a unique individual so that each one can achieve their full potential. I enjoy having to think outside of the box, particularly supporting children with communication and interaction difficulties and/or social difficulties. In more recent years I have worked closely with a number of children in care, or previously looked after, alongside their carers/parents, as well as pupils known to Edge of Care services;  and on a more personal note, I am a very proud adoptive mum to one beautiful boy!

I am interested in the benefits of animal-assisted interventions and have a particular affinity to the natural world. I recognise that it is a privilege to work with every child and over the years, I have worked with a number of remarkable children – and I look forward to working with many more.
